On Saturday, March 5, eighteen students from St. Charles West went to Fort Zumwalt East HS to perform in the District Solo & Small Ensemble Festival.
Each year MSHSAA (Missouri State High School Athletics Association) organizes district and state festivals that provide high school music students the opportunity to perform a prepared piece before an adjudicator and a small audience and receive constructive comments. MSHSAA has established the following divisions for rating musical performance achievement:
| I |
Superior |
The performance is worthy of the distinction of being recognized as among the very best for the event and the class of participants being judged. Performers achieving a I rating are invited to perform at the State Solo and Small Ensemble Festival at the University of Missouri. |
| II |
Excellent |
It is a performance of distinctive quality, reflecting more secure fundamental techniques, and a stronger musical effect than the III rating. |
| III |
Good |
The player or group in this division shows the result of sound, fundamental training. The performance shows accomplishment and marked promise, but may be lacking in consistency of execution or in convincing musical effect. |
| IV |
Fair |
The performance is lacking in one or more fundamental techniques or in musical effect. This rating indicates room for improvement in preparation. |
| V |
Weak |
The performance had obvious weaknesses and much room for improvement. The rating may indicate a performance with numerous errors in fundamental techniques or a lack of preparation. |
Unlike other sanctioned events, there are no classifications because students and schools aren't competing with each other; they are competing with themselves, with their last best performance to see how far they have come, how much they have improved.
Some of the benefits that accrue from participation in the festival include:
- Performance maturity: Unlike a conducted group, players are on their own to start together (or with their accompanist). They must choose their tempos, take responsibility for dynamics, articulations, balance, phrasing, intonation, not to mention playing the right notes and rhythms. Listening skills and musical expression improve.
- Musical courage: Each person is a soloist. You can't hide behind someone else or underplay your part as there is no one else to cover.
- Personal development: Each player has the opportunity to develop leadership skills, responsibility, organizational skills, stage presence, creativity, identity, and entrepreneurship.
How well a performer does at the festival is the result of many factors; natural ability, experience, instruction, practice, rehearsal time, technique, dedication, maturity, health, and the condition of their instrument. Ultimately, though, we should remember that the festival is only part of the music education program at St. Charles West, not the ultimate goal. It is a snapshot in time of any given performance. If a student chooses to participate it demonstrates their commitment to becoming a better musician and a contributing member of the band. And that is something in which we can all take pride.
So, please join in celebrating the St. Charles West students who participated on March 5. They are, in order of scheduled performance time:

Shop from the comfort of your own home. Products delivered to your front door. The SCW Bands earn money. Sound easy?
Band and Fundraising go hand in hand. Developing new sources of funds is critical to maintaining the band programs at the excellent level to which we are accustomed, especially since we are giving up our (used-to-be) heavy hitter, Verizon. Last November we announced a new fundraiser, a strategic partnership with Shaklee Corporation. Have you checked out the online store yet?
This is a simple fundraiser where anyone that wants to support the SCWest Bands can participate by navigating to http://scwbands.myshaklee.com. No door-to-door, no collections, no deliveries. Our earnings are based on the volume of monthly purchases, and they can provide monthly income, beginning at about $50 up to $600 or even more EVERY MONTH. (That’s $600 to $7200, or MORE annually for the band programs.) We can even sponsor other Non-Profit groups and benefit from that as well. The possibilities are HUGE!
It’s really as easy as changing brands, because once you become familiar with Shaklee, you will discover excellent quality, consumable products that most of us use daily, including cleaning products, vitamins, and health and beauty aids. We buy them somewhere already; where are you going to spend your shopping dollars? Try the Shaklee alternatives! The more Shaklee we use, and the more people we introduce to our program, the more we earn. It’s easy for anyone to participate: band families, neighbors, friends, near and far. The unconditional money-back guarantee means you have nothing to lose—and the Booster organization and the bands have everything to gain. So pass this along to everyone you know! (There is even a way for you personally to earn extra money by referring others to the program ... ask for details if this is interesting to you.)
Please note that the product prices you see online are universal. Prices are not inflated to give non-profits a cut. As a matter of fact, you can save 15% on every order by getting a membership within our online store. Members can also save with 'member only' specials from Shaklee. If you are interested, please read these attachments.

Pass along this information to anyone that might like to help support the SCWest band programs simply by changing brands on things they use everyday, like cleaners, health and beauty products. The intro brochure is intended to be printed, 2-sided, and folded (in case you would like to print some out to share). The other attachment helps someone decide where to start, by looking at what they currently buy and then directing them to Shaklee alternatives from our online store, http://scwbands.myshaklee.com.

We recently received our first check from GoodSearch, the web search engine that donates 50% of its revenue to schools and charities designated by its users. It wasn't a large check, just under $20, but the point is that it is income to the band that we would not otherwise have had and nobody had to sell anything or buy anything to get it. You just changed your default search engine to GoodSearch, specified the St. Charles West Band Booster Club as your charity, and started searching.
So it's a modest start. Have you checked lately that your browser is set to use GoodSearch? You might also want to visit the GoodSearch home page from time to time. The site uses a cookie to store your charity selection. If you regularly delete your private browsing information or have anti-spyware that does so, it is possible that this cookie has been removed so your searches won't be credited properly. Click on the banner at the bottom of any page of the site. That will reset your charity designation.
Thanks for supporting band by using GoodSearch. There is great potential here that will only be realized when a large number of supporters are participating. Please help get the word out. |
